AAFCO is a nonprofit organization that sets nutrition and labeling standards for pet food in the United States. When a dog food says it is “complete and balanced,” that claim should be based on AAFCO’s guidelines.
It’s helpful to know that AAFCO does not directly test, approve, or certify dog food products. So when people say a food is “AAFCO-approved,” they usually mean the label includes a statement showing it meets AAFCO nutrition standards.
AAFCO creates the standards, while individual states enforce pet food laws. The FDA also works with AAFCO, but it does not replace state enforcement. If a dog food claims to be “complete and balanced” without meeting AAFCO standards, that claim is not valid.
